Pack Your Checked Luggage Like A Pro
1
You've undoubtedly seen or read all about the new restrictions on carry on luggage, but what about your checked baggage? With stricter airline policies, airlines are enforcing their checked luggage policies more consistently. Be aware of what limitations your airline has for checked bags so you won't be surprised at check-in. Here are some packing tips to help you pack checked luggage like a pro.
- Don't overstuff your bags. Over packed bags are more apt to open during baggage handling. If your bag opens up during handling you will likely lose most of your items.
- Watch your weight, of your suitcases, that is! Airlines all have weight restrictions on checked baggage. Weigh your bag before arriving at the airport. There are stiff penalty charges for overweight bags.
- Put toiletries in leak proof bags. Re-sealable plastic bags are indispensable when it comes to packing your checked bags too. Be sure to put all your liquid items into baggies. They will get jostled during handling and may open up, spilling onto all your clothes.
- Bring several baggies and plastic garbage bags with you. You can use them to pack wet or dirty items in your suitcase for the return trip.
- Pack smart, but don't overdo it. It's great to be creative when packing for a trip. But don't forget about the return trip. If you pack so that everything just fits you're bound to have trouble making everything fit back in for the return trip.
- Leave some room for souvenirs. You're sure to buy something on your trip. Make sure you have enough room to pack those great items.
- Rolling items instead of folding them makes more room and aves the items less wrinkled.
- Use TSA locks or don't lock your suitcases. Regular locks can be cut off for random inspections. If you want to lock your suitcases use special locks that TSA personnel have keys for.
- If you have a lot of luggage, think about pre-shipping some items. There are services now available that will pick up your packed suitcases and ship them to your destination so they will be there when you arrive.
- Suitcases get lost. Make sure you have a luggage tag with your name and a phone number where someone can reach you while you are on your trip. Place a card with your information inside your bag as well.
